The short story by Breece D’J Pancake creates a narrator who is a murderer who only picks up his human victims if they are hitchhiking on a snowy night. Pancake used the hogs and their slop to allow the readers to compare the narrator to something that is familiar.

Breece D’J Pancake’s “Time and Again,” tells a story of a man who picks up hitchhikers during his snow plowing routes and kills them. By the context clues throughout the story you can assume that he kills the hitchhikers, feeds them to his hogs, and then packs up the leftover bones in a duffel bag and throws them off of Lovers’ Leap.

The story shows how the narrator is in a dark place in his life, and every person that is referenced was most likely killed by him. When the narrator picks up the hitchhiker, the hitchhiker immediately reminds him of his son when pancake writes “Aw, buses stink, he.

Several of his short stories were published in The Atlantic Monthly and other periodicals during his lifetime. Pancake took his own life on Palm Sunday, 1979, at the age of 26.
